TRUGEL 100 is a civil engineering grade sodium bentonite mined and processed at Unimin Australia Limited’s operating site near Miles in Queensland.
TRUGEL 100 is selectively mined and processed with strict adherence to both American Petroleum Institute (API) Spec Q1 and ISO quality assurance systems in order to maintain consistent high quality characteristics. Unimin Australia Limited’s mining and processing operation has been granted Certificate Number 13A- 0002 by the API as an authorised manufacturer of drilling fluid materials.
TRUGEL 100 is processed to meet or exceed the requirements of API Spec 13A Section 11 OCMA grade bentonite.
TRUGEL 100 contains a high proportion of the active mineral species montmorillonite, which has a unique structure and chemistry. These are responsible for a range of characteristics that makes TRUGEL 100 useful for many civil engineering and construction applications.
TRUGEL 100 forms thixotropic suspensions when mixed in clean water. The resulting gel strength holds the cuttings in suspension, particularly when operations are interrupted. The flat plate-like particles of bentonite deposit an impermeable cake on the wall of a drill hole or trench. This unique feature of bentonite stabilises the hole or excavation and assists in maintaining their dimensions.
TRUGEL 100 can be used when mixed with
other materials, normally selected soils or cement, to control permeability in
earthen dam and landfill systems and to construct in-ground cut- off walls.
Independent tests have shown that an addition of approximately 6% by weight of TRUGEL 100 will effectively seal highly
permeable pure sand.
In normal dam
sealing applications, TRUGEL 100 is
used at a rate of 5-10kg per sq. metre
or approximately 3-6% by weight of soil using the “mixed blanket” technique.
The bentonite is mixed evenly with 5-10cm of selected soil, after which the
mixture is wetted and compacted to form the impermeable layer. The impermeable
layer should be covered with a 10-15cm compacted soil layer. The same
principles can be used to construct an in- ground cut-off wall or core trench
with a mixture of bentonite and soil.
